Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Goals

Strategic Enrollment Management's goals support the university's DEI mission because they speak directly to cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment universitywide through stronger partnerships, increased involvement, personal development and data-driven decision making.



01 — Collaborate and Grow Internal Networks
Cultivate Cal Poly's recruitment and enrollment culture of collaboration, coordination and data-driven decision making universitywide. 

02 — Build and Strengthen External Networks
Continue to build and strengthen partnerships with K-12, community colleges and community-based organizations (CBOs) to increase the recruitment of students from underrepresented groups.

03 — Market and Promote
Enhance recruitment marketing and communication campaigns to increase interest from prospective underrepresented students, supporters and other key influencers.

04 — Educate and Train
Enhance DEI education and training of staff and volunteers through professional development opportunities, workshops and mentorship.


Spotlight: Mustang Mentorship Program

SEM’s Mustang Mentorship Program (MMP) was developed to create mentorship opportunities and peer-to-peer connection for high achieving, underrepresented high school students. Since launching in 2020 we have seen tremendous growth in the program. Currently, this program has 87 matches (174 total mentees and mentors) — it started with 15 matches (30 mentees and mentors). 

  • MMP primarily supports juniors and seniors from select partner high schools via mentorship provided by current Cal Poly student volunteers.
  • Mentors receive SEM-led training surrounding various DEI topics including first-generation college student challenges and the relevance of socioeconomics.
